Wong Wai Yin, piano
Hong Kong born pianist and Young Steinway Artist, Wai Yin WONG obtained her Bachelor of Music degree with First-class honours from the The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under Prof. Gabriel Kwok and was awarded a full scholarship by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund to pursue her Master Degree at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University under Prof. Boris Slutsky. Later on she was awarded a full scholarship by the Yale University School of Music, under Prof. Boris Berman and obtained the Artist Diploma.
Wai Yin has been the recipient of many international awards: she was the youngest First Prize Winner of the Southern Highlands International Piano Competition in Australia together with a Special Prize in Best Performance of Chopin Etudes； Second Prize Winner of the 17th Hilton Head International Piano Competition in USA； the “Guiomar Novaes Award” in the BNDES International Piano Competition of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The youngest Gold Medal winner in the 7th International Competition for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz held in Ukraine, together with five Special Prizes, including “Special Character and Creativity in playing”, “Best Performance with Orchestra”, “Best Performance of a Work by a Ukraine Composer”.
Wai Yin has given numerous recitals including solo recital at the 39th Hong Kong Arts Festival, the Opening Recital of the Newport International Festival in USA. Solo recitals in Brisbane, Canberra, Bowral, Paris, Cairo, New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Macau, Taiwan, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shantou, etc. In 2016, she was invited by the Radio Television Hong Kong to perform at the Christmas concert with the Hong Kong Wind Philharmonia and in 2017, she was invited by the Singapore National University as a Visiting Scholar to give masterclasses and recitals. Later on she performed in the Carnegie Hall of USA as well as in the Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam. She has also been regularly invited to RTHK to broadcast piano programs.
Wai Yin has also collaborated with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra with Edo de Waart; Hong Kong Sinfonietta; Yale Philharmonic; Macao Orchestra; Canberra Symphony Orchestra in Australia; Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra in USA; National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine; the New Haifa Symphony Orchestra in Israel with Noam Sheriff; Shantou Symphony Orchestra in China and with the Hong Kong Children’s Symphony Orchestra for several times as a featured soloist on concert tours to Lincoln Centre in New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Corvallis, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Singapore and Kuala Lumbar which have won her great acclaim.
Wai Yin was awarded the Robert H.N. Ho family Foundation Scholarship and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship for studying at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In 2011, she received the Hong Kong Asian Cultural Council Scholarship which enabled her to study at the Aspen Music Summer School and in 2015 received the Lady Fung Music Fellowship to support her further study in US.
She was awarded a Certificate of Commendation by the Hong Kong Government in recognition of her outstanding achievements in the promotion of international arts and culture activities.
